LUCIA LU ➔ EXCLUSIVE MIX
Hey Lucia, pleasure to have you on 99GINGER, how are you doin ?
Hi, 99 Gingers it’s a pleasure to be featured by you. I have just come back from vacation and I am therefore still deeply relaxed.
You’re part of Hip-Hop DJ duo Hoemies with your friend Gizem Adiyaman(Meg10), also an inclusive community platform and party organizer. How did you meet, built the entity you represent and manage it ?
Gizem and I have known each other since the 7th grade and have been best friends ever since. In 2017 Gizem came up with the idea of throwing a party by women for women. Together we expanded the concept and that's how Hoemies was born, an inclusive space for women, trans and non-binary people with a focus on the Bipoc community. A year later we toured Germany as a DJ duo. Not long later we were also on the road in Switzerland, Austria and Sweden. We are at home in Berlin with our party series, but there have also been special editions in other cities. With the pandemic, everything became much calmer for us. But we were lucky and were allowed to produce and moderate our own Spotify Original Podcast "Die Realitäterinnen". So the first Corona year got a complete turn for us and we discovered the joy of podcasting. This year we founded a company together and are making our first experiences as entrepreneurs. We have been working together for 5 years and so far every year has been a complete surprise.
You’re from Berlin. Tell us about the hottest artists on the local scene …
Berlin is probably the absolute dream for many artists. everything comes together here. Of course my colleague is Gizem aka. Meg10 one of the hottest artists in Berlin. I celebrate Patrick Mason's energy and sound when he hangs up. MCR-T is from the Live from Earth Klub label. FKA. M4A, SHamsa.
You hosted Realitäter*innen podcast with Gizem where you talk about psychology, race, gender, sexuality or mental stability. To what extent being able to give visibility to social questions impact your life ?
While Gizem and I were touring Germany, we got to know a wide variety of people and had such exciting conversations that we thought we needed a platform to share all these perspectives and experiences of the different realities of life with a larger audience. We just learned so much new things and sharing that was our greatest concern. In the meantime and now in the aftermath, we have received so many messages that have really moved us. You just have to know that there were sometimes quite difficult and deep topics, that was during the first year of the pandemic, when people were already having a hard enough time. But an unbelievable number of people were nevertheless very receptive, open and extremely grateful that we made this claim to put these topics on the agenda.
Drum and Bass, 2step, Rnb, Hip-Hop, Trap, Tech House, Latin beats, Afro Dancehall or House music, your hectic DJ sets definitely blends a lot of genres in such a bouncy dynamic way. How all that eclectic tastes come from ?
I'm a pretty jittery person, that probably can't be hidden in my sets either. I just love all of these genres and since I've been playing I've been trying to combine styles. For a long time I didn't dare to bring hip hop and techno together, but this year there was finally enough music on the market that I, as someone who did not produce myself, finally had the choice that I could finally combine everything I always dreamed of. But I still see myself as an absolute beginner when it comes to bringing it all together. So I'm still trying out a lot. I've only ever played hip hop, latin, dancehall and edits with Hoemies. Since Corona I have finally included the music that I actually dance to in clubs, namely techno and house, in my selection. it sounds a bit strange but I tried a bit to separate my private partying (Techno/House) from work (Hip Hop/ urban Styles). now i bring it all together and it even feels a bit like a release
“Don’t wish it was easier. Wish you were Better. Don’t wish for fewer problems. Wish for more skills.”
What track comes straight to your mind to make the club go mad ?
I can’t really give an answer to that. It depends on the crowd. But something 2000s influenced. Or 90s influenced like yazzus - Be my lover. Btw shoutout to yazzus, she is one of my fave producers.
We read many interesting quotes on your posts such as Epictetus’s “ When you are offended at any [one's] fault turn to yourself and study your own failings ” or Eckart Tolle’s “ Rather than being your thoughts and emotions, be the awareness behind them.”
Jim Rohn said: “Don’t wish it was easier. Wish you were Better. Don’t wish for fewer problems. Wish for more skills.”
Is there a striking part of your personal journey that particularly made you get closer to your ambition ?
I've always been very ambitious somewhere. But that wasn't always very healthy. in fact, i have a lot of struggles with my mental health. I realized at some point that I can't run away from it and deal with it, the only way is to move forward in a healthy way. Even though I've been doing this job for a while, it often feels like I'm just getting started. It's not easy, but without this work I wouldn't be where I am now. And of course my friends and those around me play a huge role in this and I am extremely grateful to everyone who accompanies me on this path.
What are your future wishes ?
I want to be more zen and satisfied with myself. and i want to be able to take care of my family.
When and where is the next time you’re gonna play ?
I’m gonna play on the 24.07. at Revier Südost and on the 14.8. at Remise Garden, a party where I’m also part of the organization crew. The other Gigs I can’t announce yet but stay tuned.
